Martinovo

Odlično martinovo kosilo,
ki nam ga je danes pripravila mami:
mlinci, rdeče zelje z jabolki in kostanjem

Today my mother prepared us
(st. Martin’s Day on November 11th):
mlinci (thin dried flatbread
with boiled salted water or soup poured over it),
red cabbage with apples and chestnuts
and a chicken instead of a goose.

In Slovenia this feast is mostly a celebration of
must turning into wine,
so there was also some good young wine
on the table today of course.

Ozimnica
Winter stock

Prejšnji teden sva prejela
obnovitveni paket najine ozimnice.

Last week we received
a winter stock renew package.
For a few years now we are buying it at Bio-farm Zel.

On the images there is one representative
of each vegetable that we have,
together with few survivals of the old stock.

From left: pickles, beetroot, mixed salad, white turnip, paprika and sauerkraut.

Kaki

Žlahtno oranžno zlató
v tihi sivini pustega novembrskega dne.
Kaki – en mojih najljubših sadežev.

Zaradi dedkove skrbne nege
ta občutljiv krasotec uspeva celo v Ljubljani!

Precious orange gold
in a silent greyness of a dull November day.
Kaki – one of my favourite fruits.

Due to my grandfather’s gentle care,
this delicate beauty grows even in Ljubljana!
(Otherwise it is very common for the
southern/coastal parts of the country.
See the events there.)

November

Leta 2001 sem staršema
ob njuni obletnici poroke spisala pesem,
ki sem jima jo 6 let kasneje ob isti priložnosti
skupaj z Mirom podarila naslikano na steklu.

Ker praznujeta novembra,

I wrote a poem for my parents’
wedding anniversary in 2001 and then,
at the same occasion 6 years later,
I painted it on glass.

And just like the poem says,
for me November is like May.
Because they celebrate their anniversary in November,
I’ve always felt this month as the month of love, May,
in spring, when people usually get married.

raznobarvnega jesenskega listja in plastificirani;

This is the celebration and the continuation from yesterday.
Not just that my dad did this beautiful table leaves-decoration,
he surprised us also with these tiles to put glasses on.
These little squares are cut out of
colourful autumn leaves and laminated with plastic foil:

Za konec pa še torta, ki jo je naredila sestra.
Je prava mojstrica v izdelavi
tort iz naravnih sestavin,
(sama naredi celo marcipan)
poseben povdarek pa je tudi v okrasitvi;

For the end here’s the cake that my sister made.
She is really good at preparing
cakes with natural ingredients
(she even makes marzipan by herself)
and she puts a lot of efford into decoration:

Vzorec z listi
Leaves pattern

Danes sem končno izvedela, zakaj je oči
ves teden tako vneto nabiral jesensko listje.
Za namizno okrasitev.

In razlog?
Boste videli jutri.

I finally found out today why my father
was so enthusiastically collecting
autumn leaves the whole past week.
For a table decoration.

And the reason?
You will see tommorow.

Večen spomin
Eternal remembrance

Dan spomina na mrtve na ljubljanskih Žalah,
ki imajo visoko kulturno zgodovinsko vrednost
in so eno najlepših pokopališč v Evropi.

Stati inu obstati
To stand and withstand

napisanih v slovenskem jeziku.

With this famous archaic phrase from Primož Trubar,
written in the title,
I’m beginning this post today,
when we celebrate the Reformation Day here in Slovenia.

A priest Primož Trubar was Slovenian protestant
reformer in 16th century, born in 1508.
He was the author of the first
printed books in Slovenian language:
Katekizem in Abecednik (Catechismus and Abecedarium).
They were published in 1550.
For a nation of only 2 millions
it is of utmost importance.

The oldest preserved written text in Slovene however
is more than thousand years old.

They say that our language is very difficult.
Among other things it is one of rare ones that use the dual.

So, here I am posting a mini Slovene-English dictionary
for all of you readers around the world;
so that when I’ll stop writing in English,
you will understand me.

Just kidding! :)

Adijo, pikniki!
Goodbye, picnics!

Odeti v topla oblačila smo se danes poslovili
od letošnje sezone piknikov na prostem;

All dressed up in warm clothes
we ended this year’s out-door picnic season today:

že napol podrt piknik-šotor;

half way down picnic-tent:
