Crngrob

O izvoru tega zanimivega, vendar mračnega imena obstaja kar nekaj razlag.

We visited a famous 13. century church at Crngrob near Škofja Loka town this afternoon.

There are many theories about the origin of this interesting, but rather dark name: Crngrob means blackgrave.

The most believable is that it derives from German word erngruben, which is combination of two words: “ern” (ploughing) and “groube” (pit). This indicates to an excavation and makes lot of sence, as there is a big rib hanging in the church. Some data says it’s a wale’s, some that it’s of a mammoth and other that it belonged to mythical Ajdovska girl, who helped workers building the church standing with one foot on Šmarna gora hill and the other on Šmarjetna gora hill. She was giving them big rocks and water from Sava River.

The second legend about the name says that the governor of Škofja Loka was very proud of the height of town church and when he found out about these big plans for the new church, he wanted to stop the workers. But when he was on a scaffold the wind blew him down. A black grass has grown on his grave afterwards.

Arcades in front of the church were the place where scenes from one of our most beautiful love story films Cvetje v jeseni (Blossoms in Autumn) was filmed.
